Why Worry?

We are more dependant than we ever imagined, yet more valuable than we dared to believe.

'Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink;

or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food,

and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?'

Matthew 6v25-27 (NIV)

We don't usually worry when it comes to what we 'will eat or drink' or 'what we will wear.' Without much thought we pick up a loaf of bread, a litre of milk from Lidl's and while we are there, buy ourselves a new sports jacket. We take these most basic of necessities for granted, in fact we treat them as an automatic right! It's not until these daily needs become sparse or threatened that we suddenly take note and begin to worry. Our worries at this time are genuine: Will my hours be cut? Will I lose my job? Will I be able to buy food, drink and clothes?

It's hard not to worry, yet we are commanded: 'do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.' You see 'worry' is a failure to trust God. It's practical atheism. It's saying God is not powerful and God is not trustworthy. Well, in our real concerns we are to remember two things:

First, we are more Dependant than we ever imagined. 'Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?' We worry about food and clothes yet the bigger and greater things (life and body) we are completely dependant. We do not create our bodies, God did. We do not control our lives, God does. God is the sustainer of all life, not Lidl! 'Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?' No! Our lives are completely dependant on our creator God:

Second, we are more Valuable than we dared believe. For a moment stop looking at the latest COVID-19 update, and: 'Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.' God provides for these creatures each day. They do not worry, they do not panic, they live each day dependant on their maker. But you; 'Are you not much more valuable than they?' Yes! We are the glory of God's creation and are more loved and treasured than we dared believe.

Prayer

Father God, please forgive me for worrying, for thinking that you are not powerful and can't be trusted. Help me when I am anxious to look to you in faith and remember; that you are the creator, provider and sustainer of my life, and; that I am more treasured and loved than I could dare to believe.
